This coffee comes from the Chirripó micro-region, which is a part of Brunca region in the south of Costa Rica. The region is named after the local indigenous people, the Bruncas, who lived there after the arrival of the Spanish. Coffee cultivation here began by the end of the 19th century, however, the coffee was used for local consumption and not exported until the 20th century. With the end of World War II, the region was not included in the national coffee allocation. The valleys between the mountains, rich volcanic soils irrigated by the 3 rivers of Chirripó, de la Sabana, and Grande de Térraba, provide ideal conditions for specialty coffee. The Chirripó region has altitudes from 600 to 1700 m.a.s.l. It is a tropical highland area with 3500 mm precipitation, relative humidity of 85-100% and an average temperature +22°C. The Chirripó micro-region is located between two mountains: Cerro de la Muerte (3,491m) and Cerro Chirripó (3,820m, the highest in Costa Rica). The valley between these mountains boasts some unique microclimate influencing a remarkable cup. So, the coffee growing is on its rise here now.
